Scholarly Publishing and Open Access: Payers and Players (PDF)
The Library Association of the City University of New York (LACUNY) held their annual Institute Friday, May 20, 2005. The title of the Institute was:
Scholarly Publishing and Open Access: Payers and Players.
Institute 2005 took place at the William and Anita Newman Conference Center at Baruch College, CUNY.
The program presented a number of perspectives on key issues. Dr. Harold Varmus, a 1989 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine and co-founder of the Public Library of Science (PloS), and Dr. Martin Blume, Editor-in-Chief of the American Physical Society presented the Keynote addresses.
Dr. Varmus discussed a view on the dissemination of scientific knowledge that departs from the subscription-based approaches of conventional publishing.
Dr. Blume expressed concerns about the financial sustainability of American Physical Society publications.
In addition to the Keynote presentations, there was a panel of distinguished speakers and eight breakout sessions covering a variety of Open Access topics.
We also developed online resources, including a Webliography and Wikiography, which include resources and links covering major aspects of Open Access.
In the spirit of Open Access, and to build a current resources list, we encourage you to post citations and/or link on our Wikiography.
Institute 2005 is dedicated to Pamela Wonsek, former Deputy Chief Librarian, Hunter College.
